I truly believe in being polite, tolerant, and kind to people who post at the exer websites for the same reason Jo has given: People who post here have had hard, difficult lives. We need affirmation, not more verbal beatings.
To me, politeness, tolerance, and sensitivity to others' feelings are the definition of political correctness. I get annoyed by posters who bash the PC Crowd. What's so wrong about being polite, tolerant, and kind? It doesn't mean I don't step on anyone's toes, it just means I don't go stomping on their toes after they've asked me to back off.
Sometimes I get up on the wrong side of the bed, or have a really stressful day at work, or simply get a hair up my arse about some crazy-making topic. That's when I find it most difficult to resist the urge to unleash my bitchy side on someone whose posting agenda is starting to irk me. So I might let my nasty side express itself by using a different handle. Still, I don't believe in badgering a person. If I snap at someone, that's it. I let it go and move on. They can think about what I've said or blow it off--I can't control that. The main thing is I've set a boundary for myself and recognized how the attitude or content of the post triggered me.
