Sounds like something a Family member in North America would dream up for SGAs to go off and do.
There's this Native American tradition where a young person goes into the wilderness seeking a vision/dream.
Not exactly 10 days with canned goods, but when you go without eating a lot and living by your wits alone in a wild place, you might just end up eating something that puts your perceptual sensors over the edge of everyday reality.
But back to the Family context: I was one of those COGers who put in time on survival farms and studied wilderness living back in the 1970s. We went out in the woods for an overnight on more than one occasion. We were always stockpiling stuff. Ever try living off a giant sack of dried soybeans for a month? There are dozens of ways to process soybeans.
I learned a lot about edible plant identification, even learned to butcher fresh road kill. I know that sounds like a joke, but it isn't. When I read the horror stories from SGs about eating the rotten vegetables that were provisioned, I think: Did you ever try butchering fresh roadkill (possum) and cooking it up? Honest to Betsy, we did that on the Roanoke farm.
There's no two ways around it: We had to be frickin' half nuts to do some of the things we did in TF.
