In the U.S., there is quite a sub-culture of survivalists. These are people who don't want to wait and see if the government will take care of them in a disaster. Wait, these are people who are pretty sure the government won't or can't take care of them, so they practice survival techniques, store food, guns, etc. I remember cutting out an article in the early 80s and sending it in about survivalist groups. F. editors liked it, it went along with the mood of TF.
