In England the Police can arrest you if they have a suspicion that you have commited a crime. They must chharge you with a crime but also have to release you after 36 hours, unless their case against you is watertight, where they must obtain a Magistrate's Order to detain you further. Remember that in England/Scotland/Wales/ N. Ireland, you are innocent until proved guilty.
If you can hide up any/ all evidence and claim you are innocent, you'll likely or not get off the charges.
