Although it seems that we share a Southern family heritage--the physical violance thing from Dad is a given--we probably differ in that I grew up in the military.
My tape from a military officer childhood is: "So bomb or beat the crap out of me! Hey, it's my job to be brave and anticpate your worst shots, see them coming, and take the heat. Suffer and die for the mission, if need be."
I just re-read Sin in the Camp. This is how I remember hearing that thing the first time: Berg uses military language to cuss out the officer corps about discipline, which is not the same as abstinence and the total absence of a behavior. The language is directed toward the male leaders, who were quite numerous in those days.
It didn't make me believe anything had fundamentally changed about TF, only that the boys were told to take it into the closet. "Buried the secret, but don't forget it or act like it doesn't exist. You just can't take advantage of the secret doctrine like some of us can right now. But wait..."
