IMO Narrative and non random surveys are not without their value. They generally illuminate a cohort of variables regarding the issue being surveyed that may not have emerged under regular sampling conditions. Many of these surveys are used as preliminary tools to open up the range of questions for consideration, the potential impact of affecting variables or just to get a general sense of causality. All surveys have potential to be "skewered" or "shaped" by the elements in a survey's construct. Even plus or minus accuracies can be affected by clever arrangement. I also worked with stats and found it a very interesting part of my job.
My name is Count Countula, I love to count, 1,2,3,4......
I had to kind of chuckle sardonically to hear the word systemite in your post. I seem to remember there was a time it was used frequently!
Happy trails!
