An excellent post! Your comments about TF's image makeover reminded me of some statements that William Sims Bainbridge made in his Foreword to James Chancellor's book. Bainbridge has also written his own book about TF, which I haven't read, but based on the following comments and several other outrights lies in that Foreword, it's safe to say he doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. Check out these outright lies:
p. xii "Whatever words we use [cult or a new religious movement], it is possible to see The Family as one of the more adventuresome of the culturally creative religious groups of the late 20th century. Seen in this way, the group is a potentially healthy, religious reaction to an advanced state of secularism."
p. xiii "With many humanists and cultural liberals, they share the general conviction that love between human beings is good and that sexuality can be a beautiful pure channel for love. Missionaries that they are, they institutionalized nuclear family."
