Some people just take a few classes, some get really into it. It has a lot to do with how much money you are willing to sink into it.
Scientologists usually stay in society and keep their jobs, but sometimes not their families.
I know a guy that I went to acting school with who totally wrote off his Family because they wouldn't get involved with the cult.
Like The Family, they don't reveal their more controversial doctrines until you are sucked way into the cult. For people just starting out, it's a self improvement workshop environment, and the beginning workshops appear to be quite helpful for most folks.
At some point you begin "auditing", which involves being hooked to an "e-meter", which is a type of lie detector machine. They ask you personal questions and record the results. Some people have said that they were afraid to leave the cult after that because these secrets could become known.
I do think that there are a lot of people who take the free personality test, and a couple of classes and drop out before they become sucked in. They probably have no idea what really goes on. They certainly don't know that the people teaching the workshops believe that they are the decendants of space aliens:
