I am sorry to have to say this but you acted in haste. As others point out the victim could have been you.
It is not true that the police does not want to get involved because they have other more serious crimes to deal with. Domestic violence is a crime in most civilized parts of the US of A. To think that having to write a report prevents the police from intervene is almost irresponsible because they already have to write the report once they show up, actually once they accept the call from the dispatcher. They have more to gain from taking care of the incident than from walking away.
A person who sees a crime, unless trained to do it (and I don't mean karate), should observe and contact the police immediatelly. You should have spent more time looking for your phone. I wish more people would have your attitude of wanting to get involved, just do it right next time. At least you are still alive and may have another chance. Wish you well bro'
