That seems like the Stockholm syndrome where in order to survive the victim eventually relates to the perpetrator. This can even occur after a much shorter term where the captive feels their life is in danger. It happened with Elizabeth Smart and people were very critical of her and could not understand why she lied to police about her identity even, or why once they took her into the city she didn't just run off or something. She was terrorized first, that's why she didn't run off.
So I believe the person's story who was 14 yrs old when she was taken captive. There was a book written called "Perfect Victim" -I forgot who the author is but it is a very similar story of a long term captive.
