This is an interesting topic. I know therapy helps and I know in the wrong hands it can be harmful but hopefully something a person learns from and can grow stronger.
I also have concerns about a mental health care system which in some states IS primarily medicating people heavily and holding a few groups led by oftentimes inexperienced therapists and for large groups of multi-diagnosed people. It is like having a school room for all grades and teaching to the lowest level, say kindergarten.
One way I see psychotherapy as helpful is that people who need medications for mental illnesses often feel better and then stop taking their medications leading to relapses.
Another is that talk therapy can help immensely when the right matching occurs btw. therapist and client.
This is a hard thing to address with a black or white answer. I have seen more positive than negative results from people getting psychotherapy that could use it.
You don't see people questioning the efficacy of treatment if a person becomes ill from diabetes or cancer,as in saying the insulin or the chemotherapy and support groups for handling the illness are useless. I know you are not saying this at all. But i would like to know what you think needs to be done or might better what exists.
