I think they were two peas in a pod and the one facilitated the other. There were enough women in the lower ranks who were oppressive leaders while their husbands looked after the kids to make things confusing. Bottom line is, it didn't matter what the gender was long as the person fit the bill for loyalty and oppressing the ranks. The dynamics in this group was very unique to anything I've ever come across.
