"I was not threatening you, I was warning you. There is a big difference."
One of the differences being that "warning" was the term I usually heard from leaders who meant to obtain the effect a threat would have.
"You have been told by me over and over..."
"I will not take lightly your personal interpretation of my words..."
"Thanks- I'm sure you wouldn't want me to do it to you."
