It's widely referred to as narcissim. As a character trait, it's fairly widespread in American culture, but some people are handicapped by this coping style and experience a lot of difficulty as a result.
Cult leaders are often highly narcissistic--so much so, that they're diagnosed as having a specific personality disorder. Zerby is an interesting paradox, I think, of something called "inverted" narcissistic personality. She's soooo humble and self-effacing...everything is "not me" but Jesus, "not me" but Dad, "not me" but demonic powers, etc.
When the world and everyone in it is defined in terms of "not me," the person is basically orienting all relationships in relation to ME.
