It definately wasn't a bed of roses.
After the first few weeks, we only had received $20.00 in donations (other than what Jane and I had donated personally). I thought that maybe everybody was sending money directly to the account. Then one of the organizers put up a message asking where all the support from the FGA's was. Apparently, little was coming in on that side as well.
At that point, I stepped up my promotional efforts, and YES... became somewhat agressive about it. I made some statements about the lack of participation that were not appreciated by some readers of both this board and NDN. Even some people who are very close friends of mine became very upset over it.
The thing I was told over and over (in email) was that I was raising money to glorify a murderer. Again, not one person said this, a number of people did.
I became more and more upset over it, because I doubt Rick would have been a murderer if it weren't for the circumstances he was raised under.
In the end we raised over $1,000.00. Every penny went directly to Elixcia. Jane and I even made up the percentage Paypal charges for the transactions.
Elixcia and Sarafina were very appreciative of or efforts, and told us so a number of times.
We decided that we didn't even want to attend the memorial because of the things that were said, but people who organized it asked us to, so we came. I was glad we did. But, I remain dissapointed in the process, and the way it all played out, including some of my own words and actions.
