While numbers and details are always going to be conflicting points when talking about the Holocaust (People who were there have another story of the true horror)--I think Mel wants to show the compassion and sacrifice of some good people (Catholics and some Christians) who helped the persecuted Jews.
There is no argument that Jews were being murdered, imprisoned, tortured, families destroyed, and unspeakable horrors being committed in the name of civilization.
