My 30-year-old son recently read a letter I wrote to my parents when I was about 20 and had just joined The Family. The leter was full of rhetoric about repentence, salvation, love, peace and heavenly joy.
"You sound like Ned Flanders on acid, Mom."
BTW, who elected Noam Chomsky to the position of America's leading intellectual? Camille Paglia nominated Marshal McLuhan. Bill Clinton nominated Maya Angelou.
As far as the U.S. braintrust on economics, historical systems and civilization is concerned, my vote for top American intellectual is Immanuel Wallerstein, founder of the Fernand Baudel Center at SUNY/Binghamton. http://fbc.binghamton.edu/index.htm
