Researcher, here is the only quotation from SD in the Love Prophet video. I've also included the two quotations from Jane Berg.
The production date of the documentary is 1998, produced by DLI Productions. When it first aired here I was still in deep denial about my past, trying to move on by ignoring it. When I noticed this documentary listed in the tv guide several years ago, I recorded it but never watched it. Only recently, after finally surfacing to deal with things, did I watch it and other documentaries on TF.
When I watched it again this morning, I was struck by the differences in the demeanours of Stephen and Jane. Stephen was captioned as an ex-member, yet his brief statement was delivered with the same exuberance as the testimonies of current members who were interviewed. In other words, if it were not for the captions indicating member or ex-member, it would've been impossible to determine Stephen's status vis-a-vis TF. Jane, on the other hand seemed uncomfortable or pained as she made her statements. Her eyes had that distant look of someone recalling unpleasant events . I'd never seen her before this, though, so maybe that's just her natural way and doesn't not indicate what's going on inside her.
Many of the interviews seem to take place at some kind of meeting between current and former members, and those interviews seem to be more upbeat, which might explain the way Stephen comes across. However, it doesn't explain why Stephen does not have anything negative to say about Berg or TF, as several other ex-members interviewed at that meeting did. Perhaps he wasn't given the chance or he was edited out, but I doubt it. The documentary gives equal time to both supporters and detractors of Berg. If Stephen had had anything negative to say there's a very good chance it would've made it into the film. His appearance and statement (for what it contains and omits) in the film appears, then, to back up what others have said about him here, that he is a fence-sitter when it comes to Berg and TF.
Stephen David: "I think the unique thing about the Children of God that really touched the kids was that you could serve God now. You didn't have to go to four years of Bible school or the conventional route, but that you could actually today forsake all you have and go and serve the Lord."
Jane Berg: [referring to pre-COG days] "For many years David always said that a man could have two wives. That it was according to the Bible that it wasn't wrong to have two wives. But in my mind I said, 'Well, I hope it never happens to me.' [nervous laugh] But I knew when he was driving around, you know, that he wasn't totally faithful to one wife."
Jane Berg: "I noticed they [David Berg and Karen Zerby] had a lot of affinity towards each other. I told my son, 'I think daddy has a second wife.' I though maybe he would say, 'Yes, I better help you out, mother. I'll take care of it.' He was a good son. He said, 'Well, that's up to him. If that's his choice, don't you, don't say anything against it.' So I accepted it."
