Natalie, if you or someone you know is speaking up publically where your identity is obvious I highly recommend having a good therapist who understands cults or domestic violence and the effects of coming out publically. For some, those stares and comments can trigger some bad PTSD.
I think it is good when a person can inform the public and also to take care of oneself when doing it! Get all the support you can.
It is possible also to interview without people seeing who you are. This way you can tell your story and protect the privacy of your family. If you decide to go this route, it helps to be in a neutral setting, not wear any unique jewelry or clothes. I understand people doing this when they have children and don't want people coming up to their kids and saying anything to hurt them.
