The smoke is the public face of the Family as simple-minded, aw shucks-honest to goodness Christians who would never hurt a fly.
The mirrors are all the PR works scattered about and in motion like a disco light with scattered reflections so you don't know where to look or what you are seeing. They desperately want to appear righteous and good.
Sincere workers abound in this fun-house or haunted house if you prefer, as well as a mixed up bag of Christians who lie continuously with a straight face--even when unnecessary--it is so ingrained in them as to be psychotic, but the glue is a hard-nailed inner circle of true-believers who have been on the parole since Berg was in England. They pay the sociologists and academics who try to demystify these snake oil salesmen.
Their names are hardly to be found on any legal documents or receipts--yet they control all the purse strings. They leave no trails, no witnesses, and they never get caught.
