The majority of people who first were recruited were indeed hippies, and most of the American leadership came for the American hippie culture and era.
Of course, on this board there are virtually no participants and ex-members from Peru, France, Thailand, India, etc. just to name a few, who were never American or hippies to start with.
It is also a time and place thing. People came from different background according to the time and place when the recruiting took place.
Since the term FG is loosely applied to all people who were not born in the group, there is an FG stereotype *within* the ex-member community, but that sort of stereotype is typical of any colonial situation where dominance, submission, and oppression are part of what goes on and create a certain kind of history.
