I think that there isn't much said about this issue. Some guys just took advantage of the easy sex, and didn't seem to do anything to help with their own offspring. But, there were others, like your husband who took up the slack.
I can't imagine how that must have been for him, especially considering his having to deal with his own personal recovery at the same time.
