I don't live in the US so can't comment first-hand, and I grew up in California so can't comment about the south.
But I was suprised a couple years ago to see a short documentary concerning race issues in the US, to know that there were still all-black, all-white neighborhoods and schools and that parts of the country still lived that way. It was quite shocking actually, because I thought the US had pretty much gotten over it, but the show revealed to me that in some places it really hadn't changed that much.
Just an observation.
