Still No intention to offend

But it sho' nuff is a place where we feel free to express moral indignation over those "welfare queens" who use their food stamps to buy pop and candy to feed their young'uns. It sho' nuff is a place where we talk about lazy folk who just don't want to work using language that leaves no one guessing whose culture we're referencing.

I just read a post at Moving On from someone with the nick "mad as hell" talking about New Orleans owner of a gas station who put a "help wanted" sign. His station was within a half-mile of the Astrodome, and don't you know that boy didn't get more than 2 applications in a week? At the same time, those New Orleans folk are using their FEMA credit cards to buy blunts & Colt-45s & weed.

Racism in the deep south is kind of like pedophilia in The Family. It's not officially condoned any more, and there's consequences if you get caught. Nevertheless, realtors who sell homes in all white neighborhoods know how to talk about the problem of managing "undesirable" buyers who want to make an offer. How do I know? I sold my deceased parents' home in Mobile just 12 months ago, and I was given an assurance by the realtor that the buyer was indeed white. His remarks shocked my yankeefied brain, to say the least.

Mr. Don, YOU'VE come a long way on the race issue--and so have many other southerners--but I think many people in the U.S. still have a long way to go on this issue, particularly to the extent that race is confounded with poverty.
