I tend to agree with you here, MG. My concerns about the photo ops and Katrina relief were more about exploitation of a crisis situation and the funneling of donations into an account that will print more lit with contact info and influence society at large to donate to, support and accept the group at large. But on an individual basis, perhaps the "good works" that many family members actually DO will be part of what they have to stablize them and build connections to something legitimate at the time they are ready to leave.
In that case, what WOULD be the point of stopping or "exposing" an individual home?
It seems the most effective thing as I think about this, and your posts made me think about my perceptions, is for people to have access to critical information about the people yanking their chains (Maria and Peter and dead dad).
I fully agree that shaming the individuals who as you say have not done anything criminal or may have done more minor things like a bit of grifting, only serves to confirm that people on the outside are the enemy whereas something crucial to leaving is knowing there is a safe place to exit to. I don't think there is a line in the sand as to what year or time period a person no longer has a right to recovery if they become willing to step outside the box.
I know how hard that was for me to do. In fact, my thought when I left was that I just needed to get away for a bit because I felt on the edge of a nervous breakdown. I felt guilty. I had to be away to be able to start thinking critically and know it was not wrong.
