hmm..I don't know - now you're getting into something else - addictions. True, I believe certain aspects of being in a cult is like an addiction and there are many addictions in life, some not so bad, some horribly bad.
Right now I am communicating with a dear lady who has been on the Activated list and met TF when she was most vulnerable - recently divorced, children moving out of the house, close loved ones passing away, etc. Predators seem to know when someone is at their low point and vulnerable.
Loneliness can cause people to do things irrationally because we all desire to have those close bonds and religion/Christianity pomises us that. Well, I saw the same thing with the gang mentality here in Calif. The "homies" replaced eachother with their nonexistent or pathetic home life - they became their family. We all need to belong, it's just an inherent need. And I think many, many people are vulnerable and everyone is at risk for being bamboolzed by a crafty cult, even the smartest of us all.
I just don't think alcohol makes anyone feel like they belong to anything, but it is a euphoric feeling that makes one think less about their not so stellar existence. In that way, there is a similarity, maybe.
