Seems to me your thinking is "extreme religion--opiate of the cultist."
I think there may be some similarities between cultish mind-control and addictive disorders, but there are also differences, as Acheick has pointed out.
You're coming from a purely mental health perspective with the self-medicating theory of addiction. People who work in addictions medicine argue that the brains of addicts & alcoholics are different than "normals", regardless of whether there's also a history truama. There's plenty of medical evidence--going back to Jellinek's original typology of four types of alcoholism--that not all substance abuse problems have the same etiology & prognosis.
Which may also be true for cultish mind-control. There may be different types of mind control issues for various personality types.
