I may have lost my religion, but I never renounced God and always, always believed in a creator and that the Bible was a spiritual book. It may be misinterpreted a lot and misused, but the stories of Jesus are true. I never changed on that. It was easier though, to go from being a liberal democrat to a conservative republican. I saw my youth as childish and ignorant and that the consequences are not what I had idealistically hoped for. It helped to accept Berg's liberal views on sex from being a renegade hippie that felt our parents were stuck in religious "jenny the mule" legalities. I thought I was breaking free from that. I've seen so many errors in so much of my thinking.
