Everyone is different. You ex who contacted his kids right after he left had already done a lot of thinking while he was still in the group, and missing his kids & realizing how he'd neglected them was probably one of the things he did a lot of thinking about,so he landed on his feet with his head functioning.
This is NOT the case with a lot of people, though. They still have a lot to sort through. I have no idea where Peter's head is at, & he may not even be fully 'out' yet. He could be just fleeing the heat in Japan, & taking on a 'system job' in Oz with his head mostly in the Family still.
