Exers who frequent the boards have something that is called "social capital". Who you know equals social capital, and many people who leave the Family will have adult children already in the System as well as old Family friends who have moved on and made a life.
The San Diego area is an epicenter of ex-Family networks, and Will to Life Foundation is well situated to take advantage of the social capital of cooperative relationships existing in that area. Building a foundation is not entirely about raising money: It's also about the "stock" that is created when a network of people develop the ability to work in collaboration to promote a shared agenda. To do this, foundation supporters have got to avoid getting hung up on personalities by developing a set of shared principles and values under which they can work to achieve their outreach mission.
What you know also equals social capital, and information is as valuable as cash. You may not be able to donate or give your old friends from the Familiy a place to live, but you may know someone who is willing to hire a former missionary. You may also know people who rent decent, affordable housing without demanding a huge security deposit.
