Our access to information was limited and monitored. And Berg really did his best to misrepresent the truth. He pre-empted our thinking by being as thorough as possible, acting like the expert for us, showing that he had already done our thinking for us, and we didn't have to bother to check out the details. He was a top class manipulator.
A lot of magicians do exactly that when they perform their illusions, they wave their hands here and there showing you that there are no hidden wires or strings holding something up, and tap on something to show you it's solid. As a rule, ANYTHING a magacian does to show you there is nothing strange going on, there IS something strange going on just there. He distracts you from observing something else, or checks it for you in a way that will never reveal what really is hidden behind the trick. It's all illusions!
