Yeah, and even with missionaries, a "furlough" means simply a short rest time back home before heading back out to work on the field again. We have friends who are missionaries in Latin America and they're back home on furlough now and planning to end their furlough in a couple weeks and head back to their missionfield. During the whole time of their furlough they visited supporters and represented their mission.
Peter's lie (and it is a lie) that Angela was not in the Family but was on furlough is a sick way to distance themselves from her and her death, yet not have to say, "Well, she left the Family. She backslid." That would make her look bad and they don't want to do that since the truth is probably that she never left the Family.
