I'm glad you asked about this. Domain name registry is kind of mysterious outside the world that webmasters operate in. But, it really doesn't need to be.
I have a registry company that I really like. They are others, and some are cheaper. But, I like this one and understand it. I think they give an excellent value for the $15.00 per year that they charge.
They also have made it so easy that you don't have to be a webmaster to use the service successfully.
For the $15.00 per year you get the following:
1. Ownership of the name you pick for a year (depending on availablity).
2. The ability to "point" that name at a target (this is the key feature that you are looking for to make your long, difficult address an easy one).
3. Unlimited Email alias's, with forwarding. If you register xyz.com, then you can make up any address at that domain. Like, All of these alias addresses have to be pointed at a real email address, but that can be a free yahoo.com address, or just your normal email address you use all the time.
There are probably some other things they throw in as well. They also have service available for an extra charge, but I never use any of them since I alreay have my own webspace. I just buy a name, and point it to whatever directory I am using.
The site can be reached at:

As I said, there are others and some are cheaper. This is just my personal favorite. A lot of people use one called GoDaddy, but I really don't know how it works, or what they offer. But it might be worth a look for comparison. I know it is cheaper:

Good luck!
