I wasn't in Japan in '84, but the grapevine would definitely have filtered information like that along, it was pretty active, although underground. I didn't hear anything about a suicide in '84 in Japan, if it happened it was pretty secret and covered up, which would have been amazing.
You have to remember that a teen during the early '80s was a rare sighting, we were very few in number, so whatever happened to us was pretty much spread around to the rest quickly, simply due to the small amount of peers we had.
It could have possibly been another country. I'll ask around and see what I come up with.
