The whole Family is founded on the 'keeping of secrets'. It gives the foot soldiers the incentive to keep going hoping that one day they'll be privy to those secrets.

The main thing my mom remembers about me being in the Family is all the secretiveness. And it wasn't just for the outsiders either. I remember dying to know what the Home Sheperds were meeting about behind closed doors. Right up to the time I lived with Ho and Ruthie in Macau secrets were the order of the day.

The biggest and baddest secret kept from members imo was the extent of STDs that were running rampant through the Family. It wasn't until we left that my sister and I found out we had herpes. I remember being made to sleep with a single brother (he had a need - poor baby) and him telling me afterwards that he had herpes. Can you believe that? What an absolute creep. I'd like to see him now and knee him really really hard in the crotch
