jesse, i know their are many reasons we as humans can , and should, legitimately be angry. i'm not sure what exactly david is talking about in those verses. "bloodthirsty men" certainly sounds like they are pretty wicked folks, and praying for God to put an end to them might well be appropiate. yet i'm not sure that everything in the psalms reflects the heart of God... these are prayers, emotional outpourings, of humans in dialogue w/ God. (consider ps 137:9 for example. it seems difficult to imagine jesus ever uttering such a thing.) and it might also be helpful to remember that david is not only called "a man after mine own heart" but also, was told he had shed too much blood to be allowed to build the temple!
but i wonder if we need to be careful in appropriating such verses in our own hearts? it is interesting to note that immediately following the verses you qted, david prays "search me o God, and know my heart, try me and know my thoughts, and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting."ps 139:23-24.
i'm not trying to criticize your expression of your heart. i'm only sharing some of the thoughts that i've mulled over in thinking thru these type of passages, and how they relate to say, the sermon on the mount, or jesus' utterances from the cross. hope you don't mind. i know you are a "word man" so i hope it's ok. peace.
