we have a grandchild w/ learning disabilities, and were amazed at the level of concern and special effort our local elementary school poured into him. it has been hugely helpful. it would be worth their while to at least visit and enquire what programs are available. some school districts even make some resources available to homeschool families.
there are also a number of orgs geared toward helping homeschoolers work w/ their special needs kids. www.nathhan.org and www.nacd.org both have websites w/ interesting links and articles. i've met folks from both groups, and they are wonderful people.
but of course, it takes a lot of commitment on the part of the parents. if they are really committed to the church you attend then perhaps the pastor would be willing to broach the subject w/ them. you might also find diligent homeschool families in the church who could encourage them to seek out the right help. people are a lot kinder than i'd supposed from that family paranoia about all things system.
trying to expose them to thinking that might convict or encourage them in the right direction might at least be worth a shot. of course some parents are fearful of opening up about their challenges w/ their kids, so it might be tricky. but if the child can get help now, it might really change his life. good luck.
