You were extremely vulnerable when you joined, because "flipping out" essentially means your core personality was in a state of dis-integration. Since a major psycho-social developmental task of adolescence (12-24 years old) is personality/identity integration, your use of drugs at that age really arrested and reversed the natural developmental process. Recovery is sometimes conceptualized as the process of re-integrating various "lost" and underdeveloped parts of our personality into functional, healthy whole.
I'm not sure what you mean by Hasssan's "definitions". I liked Hassan's BITE model quite a lot.
