When it comes to the issue of who owns the story and who should have control over it, I absolutely agree with your therapist that the victim/survivor of abuse owns it. It IS unethical to use people's specific stories without their express permission. Even if they have written about it in their own forum or on other forums, it was their choice to. It is exploitation to take their story and use it for any agenda without their permission. EVEN THEN, I think it unethical to use it if the victim has not had therapeutic support because they may be unaware of the potential fallout of this kind of exposure and might easily be manipulated into saying something that could directly hurt them as a result.
