Is that Sam did not ask directly, and it could be quite possible that the "friend" asking somehow misunderstood what Sam asked, or even did the asking thinking it was a good idea, and not waiting for Sam's verification.
Since it was not done directly by Sam, then I think there is room for error on both sides.
