Back when NDN General (later Crossfire) was a very busy place, I used to cringe when well known former members would show up to tell their story. It always seemed to lead to them gettting the cyber version of being drawn and quartered.

One one hand, I can see the importance of documenting what has happened in the past. But, on the other hand, I can't imagine why some people would expose themselves to the kind of treatment they may face on the boards.

There really isn't anything one can do about it. I'm still a Coordinator over at NDN, and I still get up every morning and look for material that might be a candidtate for deletion because it is abusive, or outside our guidelines. But, the fact is, this is the world of instant world-wide, online publishing. By the time I, or one of my associates sees something, it might have been published already for many hours.

We don't tell people what to say or think, and even if we did, it wouldn't work. So, administrators on the various boards, really can't guarantee anyone who wants to come forward that they won't face some pretty intense attacks.

Of course, in some cases, maybe they should have to face it, and perhaps that is part of their own recovery.

It is interesting that James Penn originally set up his own website (Magic Green Shirt) where he could control the content, and "live" comments were not allowed. It was presented in that format for years. I seem to remember him coming to NDN briefly and exchanging some dialogue soon after the website launched, then we didn't hear from him again until recenly on movingon.org.

I guess I've got a lot of questions on this topic, and no real answers. An attorney told me once to be very careful about what I put in writing. The problem with this medium is that we put EVERYTHING in writing, and it never really goes away.

It is a lot to consider for major former figures.
