I used the word leader but the actual job was more like a manager. Nobody, NOBODY, would be unless there was a tacit understanding of their commitment to blindly follow. The manager had the power because he was acknowledged as the one who could communicate with the immediately superior layer. Access was power and was the reason to follow them, just like in any other cult.
Other than that, depending on their responsibilities and tasks, everybody had their own schedule and set of activities for the day and the week.
Most women were involed in the traditional house chores while males were on the heavier physical activities. It was definitely a male dominated org. There were few women in places of direct control of males, or in more neutral positions (like sort of embassadors at large) but whose decision powers were not really too obvious.
Comparing it to a militaristic society, it was more like a bunch of fanatics loosely organized arround the manager of the home. Sort of all officers of the same rank under one super general who is the one to make decisions.
