Bessie, an African-American housekeeper of no fame or fortune who lived in Chocolate City (Washington DC) during the Great Depression. She's a 20th century incarnation of the Venus of Millendorf, sometimes referred to as the Hottentot Princess by the good old boys in my hometown of Opp, Alabama.
Bessie's big secret is that even though she looks like everybody's favorite Mammie--Aunt Jemima--and she's every bit as sweet as that maple syrup that pours out of Auntie Jem's nappy head--and even though she loves Jesus and wades in the water praising His Blessed Name every step of the way--well, turns out Bessie's a transexual. Yup, she's a man trapped in a woman's body.
Why? Because I have always had a very deep sense of irony along with a perverse need to take Berg's white male phallocentric spirituality and draw a smiley face on its limp head.
