Sounds to me like McGuire was just trying to pass off a couple of his fantasies as a true story. In the off chance that this is, in fact, an accurate account, I highly doubt that The Family/COG was involved. It definitely doesn't sound like Family behavior and doctrines. They have never believed strongly enough in reincarnation to tell someone else they were reincarnated.
The fire at the end adds a nice touch to the story, too. Any evidence to back up or refute his story were allagedly destroyed.
