My general impression of the "research" that has been done by Family-owned academicians is that they are third-string players in the scholarship game. There isn't a first-rate social scientist in the bunch.
I think it is only a matter of time before a legitimate researcher with some standing in the social science community does a groundbreaking study on the second generation. And in all fairness, the mounting number of abuse stories being told by first generation "detractors" can no longer be summarily dismissed as the sour grapes of a few isolated, "disgruntled" former members. The evidence for a pattern of sociopathic manipulation, coersion, deceit, and outright criminal activity is too pervasive to be easily dismissed as an unintended byproduct of religious zeal on the part of a few misguided persons.
