Anyone trained in sociology knows that you have to first define a term very precisely, then look for ways to validly operationalize it (i.e., formulate concrete measures that allow an abstract concept to be analyzed systematically.)
Many people trained in the sciences--whether it's the hard or soft sciences--like to believe they are completely objective & have no biases. I was trained a little differently. I was taught that because it's impossible to be completely objective, it's important to identify as much of my subjective bias as possible and view this as a limitation of study.
