Well, here in the U.S. it was a blatant drug culture, that's for sure. I saw a lot of my friends getting their brains fried on LSD and other drugs, and of course, just about everyone was passing a joint. That's why I barely graduated high school. Nearly every song had some sort of drug message in it. And if you believe that Clinton didn't inhale, I've got some swamp land in Florida to sell you. Thankfully, most people grew out of the stage and straightened up. Even Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin ended up on Wall Street. But no one can deny that the 60s was a drug culture. There are some songs that when I listen to them, that's what I think of and I'm transported to some place and time where I'm getting high. I don't like it and I don't like listening to them, like the Doors. The Doors has to be a classic example of rock groups in the 60s and how their music exemplified that. I, personally, do not have good feelings about it.
In fact, when I was in Thailand in the early 70s and witnessing to military personnel at the Air Force base, one guy told me "The whole air force is 'flying'" = Meaning they were all stoned. I used to wonder if that contributed to losing the war in Viet Nam. I'll stop there, that's too political, but I'm sure drugs had an affect.
There are bands that I like now though, like the Moody Blues, they have timeless songs that aren't drug inspired.
