My wife and I were in Amway, just after she left The Family.
It is very cult-like. People get really into it and believe they will get rich, and be able to quit their jobs, making astronimical amounts of money working about 20 hours a week. I worked at it a lot more than that. When we finally did qualify for a big paycheck, our upline sponsor kept the money. Amway would not help us recover our earnings ("we paid him, we don't pay twice"). So, we quit.
It is like a pyramid scheme, except that it is legal because a product changes hands (not just money). Making money in MLM depends on people getting in friends and relatives. After you burn out all of them, you find yourself going to coffee shops talking to strangers about it.
Some people really do make a fortune in it, but very few, and they work a long more than 20 hours a week.
