We were all told, "if you have a doubt, wrap it in a bundle of faith and put it up on a shelf." So we kept wrapping until we ran out of wrappers or we had no more shelf space.
Another way we kept from seeing that the king had no clothes was if something really weird came out, we'd say, "Well, I know the BASICS are good." Meaning, I don't know about this one but I'm staying in the Family because I know that 90% of what Dad said I believe. Then it got down to 80% then 70% and finally when we really examamined closely we realized only 40% of the 'basics' we really believed in and those 40% were taken right from the Bible anyway, which means we didn't need the MLs to tell us how to wipe our bottoms or discipline our kids.
I know there were periods when I only stayed in because of the terrible fear of so-called "failing God" if I left. When I finally overcame the fear and thought for myself, the reasons were obvious to leave. So glad I did! I've never looked back!
