I don't know what it's like in China, but watch out for scam artists. Maybe they haven't gotten that "western" yet, but they certainly have the bad and the good just like anywhere in the world. Never go out alone, stay close to your partner's side and wear a money belt. Take a copy of your passport and put it someplace separate (very important) and if you have traveller's checks, a copy of the number, also, just in case. Traveller's checks are the best, when mine were stolen, it was as easy as 1,2,3 to get them replaced.
